Reiki is a form of energy healing originating Japan. It is a form of natural healing involving the practitioner laying their hands on or near to the patient to transfer energy through their palms to their patient. Reiki aims to heal the body on a physical, emotional and spiritual level.
In common with other forms of Chinese or Japanese medicine Reiki heals the body by stimulating and balancing the energies running through it. Reiki focuses on healing by laying hands on, or near to points corresponding to the chakras, or energy centres, of the body. The chakra then draws energy from the practitioner to begin a process of self-healing within the body. The practitioner may also lay hands on a specific site that has experienced injury to begin natural healing of the area.
Reiki was devised in 1922 by Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist. He developed the system after years of studying meditation and physiology. There are two branches to Reiki. The Traditional Japanese branch is instinctive and relies on the practitioner to ‘read’ the patients energy pattern and place their hands accordingly. The Westernised technique is more systemised and has a prescribed system of hand positions and placements.
The practitioner will ask the patient to lie on a massage table and to relax. There is no need to remove any clothing as the energy can pass through any obstacle even a plaster cast. The practitioner will then spend a few moments centring themselves and preparing for the therapy. The therapy takes place in a calm and relaxing environment without any unnecessary talking.
The session will usually include the practitioner placing their hands in between 12 and 20 positions for 3 – 5 minutes in each position.
Reiki is beneficial to any patient wishing to heal injury or to address emotional or physical issues including depression, anxiety and sleep disorder. More information is available from the Reiki Association and other Reiki and energy healing websites.
